Through a partnership with Ducks Unlimited over 3,000 acres of land at Poplar Grove has been protected by a conservation easement. Poplar Grove consists of approximately 6,000 acres, meaning the easement protects half of the property. The property adjoins two other easement areas, making the total contiguous land protected 12,000 acres.
Salt and freshwater wetlands, bottomland hardwoods and tupelo and cypress swamps are protected in the easement. The land will be responsibly managed for wildlife and low-impact recreational activities such as kayaking and horseback riding. These activities will be balanced with the preservation of the ecological integrity of Poplar Grove.
Prior to beginning development at Poplar Grove, the cultural and natural resources were inventoried on the land. This allowed protections to be put in place that would safeguard these resources during the development process. Passive displays and interactive programs highlight the cultural and natural history of the area. Property owners are an important part of the Poplar Grove community and carry on the long tradition of responsible land management.
