Home Positioning

Building in a Conservation Community means finding ways to minimize your impact on the land. This starts before building even begins. Placement of your home on your lot is an important first step. Ideally you can find a way to nestle your home onto the lot so that it becomes part of the landscape rather than an interruption to what is there naturally. Significant trees and wetlands should be protected and can be highlighted in your landscaping. The Poplar Grove naturalist, Meg, can help you identify significant areas on your lot.

Placement not only benefits the environment, it benefits the home owner also. Designing a home with passive solar features can reduce heating and air costs. Passive solar is building with the sun in mind, as was done hundreds of years ago when Poplar Grove was a working rice and cotton plantation. Porches were situated to catch the breezes and buffer the house from the southern exposure during the hot summer months.
